PDC2008 UPDATE 4 - Day 3 - Microsoft Research and Futures

Today's keynote was a showcase of some of the cool things that Microsoft Research is working on.  Demos included SensorMap, Boku, the Worldwide Telescope and the next generation past Surface, "SecondLight".  While all of Microsoft's presentations were very cool, check out this video of "SecondLight".

Session talks of interest today for me included a talk on parallel programming for managed code developers, and Anders Hejlsberg's talk on the future of C#, and the Mono talk given by Miguel de Icaza.

A Primer on Encryption in SQL Server 2005: Part 1

One of the main enhancements in the area of security in SQL Server 2005 was added native encryption. Having read online documentation, few book chapters and a few posts on the web, I was generally familiar with the new concepts. After attempting one practical implementation, however, I realized that I owe it to the community to share my experiences.  That’s why this post was born.

PDC2008 UPDATE 3 - Day 2 - Windows 7, "Oslo", and Other Bits and Pieces

The highlight of yesterday's events for me was a combination of the announcement and demo of Windows 7, Don Box's very entertaining keynote demo of some of the Azure bits, and the attendee party at Universal (lots of fun + more than a little spooky).    Read on for more on all...

PDC2008 UPDATE 2 - Day 1, Microsoft Azure Announced

Day 1 at the PDC has been a lot of fun. In typical Microsoft fashion, the opening keynote offered the announcement of a new product offering. In this case, a new collection of "cloud services" from Microsoft under a new platform, Microsoft Azure.

PDC2008 Update 1 - Silverlight + You

This is the first of hopefully a series of daily posts live from PDC2008.  The polish of these posts might not fit what I usually do, but I thought it more important to get information out as I received it rather than wait until the end of the week to roll it all up.  This should save Tim and Kevin some work :).

Read on to hear more about Day -1 at the PDC.

Using Microsoft Silverlight in Business Applications

The release of Silverlight 2.0 introduces some fundamental changes that make it worthy of consideration for business applications. At the time of this writing, Silverlight is currently at version 2.0. When the previous version, Silverlight 1.0, was first introduced, it was mainly focused on multimedia functionality and seemed to be Microsoft’s competitor to Flash.

Exception Handling in SQL 2005

Exception handling is an essential part of any application, including applications that communicate with SQL Server. Until recently SQL Server allowed handling exceptions in T-SQL code by using the @@ERROR global variable, which has its limitations. In this article I will briefly review exception handling using @@ERRROR and new exception handling features that were introduced in SQL Server 2005.

A Primer In Master Pages

This article will look at Master Pages, a built in feature of ASP.Net that was introduced in .NET 2.0 and has been enhanced in the current 3.5 version. This article will not cover every aspect of Master Pages but instead is intended to be an introduction. We will examine how to create a Master Page, content pages and hook them together. We will also look at how to setup several mechanisms for communication between the pages and finally go over a few pitfalls to avoid. The writer assumes the read has a basic understanding of how to create ASP.Net web applications using Visual Studio 2005 or later.

Networks: The Other Infrastructure

We all know the importance of keeping a stable infrastructure - roads, bridges, utilities, and the equipment needed to maintain them all need to be in good working order to ensure a healthy city. However, there is another equally important yet often overlooked infrastructure: the network. As cities increasingly move from paper-based, labor intensive operations to automated electronic administration, having a stable and secure network infrastructure is crucial to keep operations running smoothly.

Vista Development Impressions

I took the time to upgrade my development laptop from Windows XP SP2 to Vista Enterprise last week.  For the most part, things went pretty smoothly.  I did hit some minor inconveniences though, so thought it'd be good to share my solutions with others who may be hitting the same problems.

3 Ways to Use The Web to Drive Economic Growth

Driving the economic development of a city or county is one of the primary goals of any local official. A healthy economy means active, affluent residents and increased income for the city itself. Officials have mastered a number of tools to help their organization prosper but an often overlooked avenue for driving economic development is perhaps one of the easiest: a great website.

A Requirements Analysis Primer

Depending on the maturity of the software development processes within an organization, activities such as requirements analysis and design are treated as wasted time.  The logic seems to follow that programmers should be writing code, not talking about writing code.  For anything but the most insignificant of solutions, this focus is short sighted as it’s trained on the single activity of writing lines of code rather than the overall goal which is to best solve the business problem within a given set of constraints.

Hummingbird DM AEM: Automated Email Management

What is AEM?  It is basically a plugin for MS Exchange that makes it possible for all emails in an organization to be automatically archived into the Hummingbird DM system according to flexible rules that you define. I was able to get AEM working effectively, but there were also several aspects of the installation and configuration that were not documented well, or which required a lot of trial and error, so I want to share some of the lessons learned.
